原籤題「林椿杏花春鳥」，畫又名太平鳥的朱連雀立杏花枝頭，回首與觀賞者呼應。
本幅枝幹筆法接近林椿「山（木茶）霽雪」，惟轉折提頓較明顯，技法上更顯純熟。用色層層填染，具「山（木茶）霽雪」韻味。花朵白粉分染處理，與推斷為馬麟（約1180-1256後）所作之宋人「桃花」相類，然「桃花」枝幹更見自然感。林椿、馬麟的活動時期在先後間，「杏花春鳥」則或是略晚於馬麟之典型精緻南宋院畫作品。(20101015)
內容簡介（英文）
The original title label for this work reads, “Lin Chun’s ‘Apricot Blossoms and a Spring Bird,” and depicts a Japanese waxwing, also known as a “bird of peace,” perched on the branch of a blossom apricot tree, turning its head as if in response to the viewer.
The brushwork for the branches here is similar to Lin Chun’s “Camellia After Snow,” only that the turns as well as starts and stops of the brush are more distinct, the technique appearing more clearly mature. In terms of coloring, there are many layers of filled washes, much in the manner of “Camellia After Snow.” The white pigment of the blossoms was applied in washes, like the style found in the anonymous Song dynasty “Peach Blossoms” now associated with Ma Yuan or Ma Lin. Since Lin Chun was active before Ma Lin, this work could be a refined painting typical of the Southern Song done slightly after Ma Lin.(20101015)
